“Sam, Sam, Sam…” Jean said cheerfully when he answered his brother’s call on his car phone as he left the hospital for his mother’s house later that morning. “What’s up, brother?” His fingers drummed against the steering wheel as he waited for the traffic light to turn green.

“Well, someone sounds very chipper this morning.” Sam drawled. “Not what I was expecting.”

“And what was it you were expecting?” Jean moved when the light turned green. God, he felt so alive. Who wouldn’t be if they got to spend the morning with a man they adored, he thought with a grin.

“For someone who I’m told is suffering from extreme depression, you sound cocky as fuck.” Sam said making Jean laugh.

“Don’t believe everything that idiot Dean tells you.” Jean chuckled. “I’m on my way to see mum. Where are you?”

“At the airport to pick up Ty,” Sam responded. “Talk to him.”

“Jay, you alright?” Tyler asked without preamble. He sounded worried.

“Never better bro. Welcome back.” Jean said.

“Thanks. Hey, why don’t you meet us at Sam’s?” Tyler said.

“Now? I’m on my way to see mum.”

“Aw come on, today is Sunday. You can go see her later in the day.” Tyler said. “Olivia is preparing a feast I hear. Come on.” He cajoled. “I’m calling Dean to join us.”

Jean groaned. He knew what was going on. “An intervention is not necessary, Tyler.” The brothers thought he needed the talk. “I’m fine.”

“Let me be the judge of that,” Tyler said firmly. “And I won’t exactly call this an intervention because Josh, Allan, and Ron won’t be there.”

“Ya think? I’m going to be stuck with two shrinks and a moron. I’ll be better off with a full house.”

Ron and Allan were attending a Pharmacy Conference in Germany. And Josh had traveled with their dad that morning, to be with the family of Michael’s brother who had passed two days earlier. Michael wanted them to stay with the family for a week before the funeral, which was scheduled to take place the coming weekend. They were all to fly out for the funeral with their mother.

“Listen, mum must be bored in that house without dad…”

“Mum should have gone with her husband if she didn’t want to be in that house alone.” Tyler snorted. “Stop trying to get out of this, buddy. See you soon.” The line went dead.

“Ooooh, fuck my life,” Jean muttered as he changed course and headed in the direction of Sam’s house instead. If only Bradley wasn’t traveling out that morning, he groaned. He could picture them in bed, under the covers, talking about everything and nothing amidst tiny, sweet kisses. “Ughh…” Jean groaned. He couldn’t wait to hear Bradley’s voice. He’d promised to give him a call before their departure.

“Hey babes.” Jean kissed Sam’s wife on both cheeks and gave her a bear hug.

“Hi, my love.” Olivia Broody laughed as she cupped Jean’s cheeks in her palms. “Have you lost weight?”

“Err…yeah.” Jean gave a mock scowl which made Olivia laugh.

“Never mind.” She stepped back, looked Jean down and up, and then grinned. “You look good enough to eat.”

“Wanna marry him instead?” Sam drawled from behind them just as Dean pulled up with a loud honk. “Hey, do you mind you moron…” Sam bellowed as Dean got out of his car. “The baby is sleeping.”

“Uncle Dean is around Stephie…” Dean screamed instead, making Olivia and Jean laugh and Sam scowl even harder. “Hey, Sexy.” Dean hugged and picked Olivia up. “Damn, you smell good.” He gasped, making Sam roll his eyes.

“Wanna marry him too?” Sam smirked at his giggling wife. “Come on you two.”

“Where’s Ashley?” Jean asked, expecting Sam’s feisty three-year-old daughter to pop out with her infectious laughter.

“The neighbour’s house,” Sam responded as he led his two loud twin brothers through the living area, up the stairs, and then to the cozy rooftop terrace where assorted goodies had been laid out. “He couldn’t even wait for us.” He shook his head at Tyler whose mouth was full of pancake.

“Greedy much.” Dean drawled as he pulled up a chair and grabbed a croissant.

“Fuck off, Dean.” Tyler turned concerned eyes on Jean. “What’s going on? Dean says you’re not even partaking in any surgeries. That’s not like you, buddy. You…”

“I think he’s suffering from…” Dean started but Jean silenced him with a stern look…an effect which wore off in just about two seconds. “…a broken heart. I told him to go talk it out with Jackson this morning but he left my place at dawn for god knows where. He…” Dean stopped talking when he saw the sheepish look on Jean’s face. “Oh…you went to see him.”

“Went to see who?” Sam asked, looking confused.

“Bradley.” Tyler breathed, staring at Jean who was busy eating.

“Why did he have to see Bradley?” Sam asked as he dished some eggs and bacon onto his plate.

“’Cause they’ve been fucking.” Dean answered smoothly, ignoring the finger that Jean gave him. “And then, from the look of things, Jackson called things off and then…” He stopped talking when Jean’s phone began to ring.

“If you three assholes will excuse me.” Jean stood up. He hoped it was the call he’d been expecting. “I need to take this.” And even before he left his brothers, Dean started giving Sam the rundown.

“Are you ready for this Sam?” Jean heard Dean drawl mischievously as he walked away. “So your brother decided to put his love for honey pots aside and try sausages. One particular sausage. Soldier boy’s sausage.”

Jean shook his head in amusement as he entered Sam’s study which was not too far from the terrace. His twin brother was an idiot, plain and simple. He clicked on the answer button as he closed the door behind him.

“Brad?” Jean sat in the chair behind the desk

“What took you so long?” Bradley’s voice was mixed with the sound of the whirling blades of an aircraft.

“Sorry. Had to walk away from a pack of hyenas. It’s time huh?”

“Yeah. I’m missing you already.” Bradley groaned.

“Can you not go?” Jean asked softly.

Jean had been feeling extreme elation since spending time with Bradley that morning. Who wouldn’t, after experiencing all that rapturous pleasure and finally getting confirmation that the one you liked actually liked you right back? But suddenly, he felt as if he was losing Bradley all over again and it wasn’t a pleasant feeling at all. That earlier joy had clearly delayed his reaction to Bradley leaving.

“I told you back at the condo that I wish I could back out.” Bradley sighed. “For the very first time in my life, I don’t want to go on a mission.” He rasped.

“You could tell them you’re suddenly feeling pains in your groin,” Jean grunted, feeling an uneasiness deep in his gut.

“I’m feeling something alright but it’s definitely not pain.” Bradley chuckled.

“I don’t want you to go.” Jean whispered, putting his head on the desk.

“It’s too late to pull out, babes.” Bradley groaned. “I was advised to sit this one out as it’s too soon after all that shit but I insisted I wanted to go. Now it would sound very stupid to say I don’t wanna.”

“Sure there’s no way we can get in touch whilst you’re there?” Jean heard the whine in his voice but didn’t really care at that point. He was not alright.

“No. But be assured that I will get in touch if I… Oh, buzz off.” Jean heard Bradley yell at someone in the background.

“Get off the phone, Jean.” Jean heard Ty say. He sounded closer. “Your boyfriend’s gotta go serve his country.”

“He knows.” Jean breathed. It wasn’t a question.

“Err…yeah.” Bradley sighed.

“How?”

“He smelt you in my apartment,” Bradley responded. “Right after watching you go right past him into your car without even noticing he was there.” He drawled. “Oh, and you apparently had this goofy smile on your face too. There was no way I could convince him that the Creed he smelt wasn’t yours.”

“Fuck. Let me talk to him.”

“Jean?” Jean could feel Ty’s smirk even through the phone.

“Two months ago, you asked me to keep him safe, remember?” Jean said shakily.

“I do.”

“Now it’s your turn. Keep him safe for me, please.” Jean’s voice trembled with emotion. He didn’t know what was happening to him. He just felt lost.

“You got it,” Ty muttered. “Now fucking pull yourself together and tell him something nice and encouraging otherwise you will ruin this for him before he even leaves. Got that?”

“I’ll try.” Jean sighed.

“Good. He’ll be fine. Don’t worry too much.” Then he was gone.

“Jean?”

“Take care of yourself, okay?” Jean wished he could reach into the phone and give Bradley a hug. “I’ll be thinking about you every second.”

“That’s so sappy I don’t know how to respond,” Bradley murmured.

“Say you’ll dream about me anytime you close your eyes,” Jean said.

“Dream about…you want the enemy to kill me in my sleep whilst I’m busy having a wet dream?” Bradley growled, making Jean laugh despite himself. “’Cause trust me, any dream with you in it will definitely end up being a wet one.” He laughed. “Are you okay?” Bradley asked softly.

“No, I’m not but what can I do? Be safe.”

Bradley went quiet for a moment. When he felt Ty’s hand on his shoulder, he said quietly; “Take care, Jean. Bye.”

“Bye.”
