Never Just Friends

Emily’s Dilemma

Emily’s Dilemma

Emily and Jacob’s budding romance was like the first bloom of spring—fresh and full of promise. But just as she started to let herself believe in it, a dark cloud appeared on the horizon.

The rumors started as a whisper in the hallways, spreading like wildfire until they were impossible to ignore. By the time Emily heard them, they were already swirling in full force. She sat with Hanna at their usual table in the cafeteria, her expression tight with worry.

“They’re saying he cheated on his last girlfriend,” Emily said, her voice low but edged with uncertainty. “I don’t know what to believe.”

Hanna frowned, setting down her sandwich. “Who’s saying that?”

“Does it matter?” Emily asked, her tone sharper than she intended. She sighed, rubbing her temples. “It’s everywhere, Hanna. People are talking about it in class, in the halls… I even overheard it in the library.”

Hanna leaned forward, her eyes narrowing. “Have you talked to him about it?”

Emily hesitated, her fingers fidgeting with the edge of her notebook. “No,” she admitted, her voice small. “I’m scared of what he’ll say.”

“Emily.” Hanna’s tone was firm, pulling Emily’s gaze up to meet hers. “You have to talk to him. You’re never going to know the truth if you don’t ask. And if you care about him—and I know you do—you owe it to both of you to get the truth.”

Emily swallowed hard, the knot in her stomach tightening. “What if it’s true?”

Hanna reached across the table, placing a reassuring hand on Emily’s. “Then at least you’ll know. But you can’t let rumors decide your relationship for you. Talk to him.”

Later that afternoon, Emily found herself standing outside Jacob’s locker, her heart pounding in her chest. She had rehearsed what she was going to say a dozen times, but now, as she watched him pull a textbook from the shelf, every word seemed to vanish from her mind.

“Hey,” she said, her voice coming out shakier than she intended.

Jacob looked up, his face lighting up with a smile. “Hey, Em. What’s up?”

She shifted nervously, glancing around to make sure no one was within earshot. “Can we talk? Like, privately?”
