Finn’s Distance
Finn’s Distance
The silence between Hanna and Finn had stretched on for days, a heavy, suffocating presence that weighed on her every time she tried to focus on something else. She knew Finn needed space to process everything—the lies, the video, the storm of rumors and manipulation—but it didn’t make the ache in her chest any easier to bear. The distance between them wasn’t just physical; it had seeped into their conversations, their gestures, and the way they looked at each other now. Every time she tried to reach out, to bridge the gap, the words seemed to fall flat.
Hanna found herself in the library after school, staring blankly at a notebook filled with half-finished homework she couldn’t bring herself to care about. She had tried to focus on studying, on getting through the day, but nothing seemed to stick. The words on the page blurred, as if the weight of everything else in her life was pushing everything else to the background.
Her phone buzzed on the table, but she ignored it, knowing it was just another message from Elordi, or maybe Ciara’s next attempt at pushing her buttons. She couldn’t handle it. Not now. Not when everything felt like it was falling apart.
“Hey,” Emily’s voice cut through her thoughts, gentle but firm. Hanna looked up to see her best friend sitting across from her, concern etched in every line of her face. “You’re torturing yourself, you know that?”
Hanna exhaled sharply, sinking back into the chair. “I don’t know what else to do, Em. I’ve tried everything to fix this, to fix us. Every time I try, it feels like things just get worse.”
Emily didn’t hesitate. She reached across the table, her fingers squeezing Hanna’s hand in a simple but powerful gesture of support. “You will,” she said, her voice steady. “Finn loves you. He’s just… overwhelmed, okay? This isn’t easy for him, but you’re not alone in this. He’s not going anywhere.”
Hanna nodded, but the doubt that had been gnawing at her for days still simmered under the surface. “I hope you’re right,” she murmured. “I just can’t shake the feeling that Ciara’s lies have already done irreparable damage. What if it’s too late? What if Finn can’t look at me the same way again?”
Emily’s hand tightened around hers, her grip steady and unwavering. “Ciara doesn’t control this. You and Finn, you’ve been through so much already. You’ve got this, Hanna. He’ll come around. Just give him the time he needs to see things clearly.”
But even as Emily spoke, Hanna couldn’t help but wonder if that was true. Could things go back to the way they were? Or had Ciara’s manipulations already planted seeds of doubt that would never fully go away? Every time Hanna thought about the way Finn had pulled away from her, the way his eyes had looked at her during their last conversation, she felt a pang of fear that she might have already lost him.
As much as she wanted to believe Emily’s words, as much as she wanted to hold on to the hope that Finn’s love for her was enough to weather this storm, a small part of her feared that the damage had already been done. What if he couldn’t trust her anymore? What if all those moments of doubt—no matter how small—grew into something bigger, something that would always stand between them?
Hanna closed her eyes, trying to shake off the spiral of thoughts, but they clung to her like a shadow. She missed Finn. She missed the way he used to look at her, the way they could talk about anything and everything without fear of judgment. Now, it felt like there was an invisible wall between them, one that was getting taller and harder to climb with every passing day.
“What if I can’t fix this?” she whispered, more to herself than to Emily. “What if this is it?”
Emily didn’t answer right away, but when she did, her voice was softer, filled with the kind of understanding that only a best friend could provide. “You’re not alone in this, Hanna. You’re stronger than you think. And Finn? He’s not the type to give up on you. Just give him time to see that.”
But even as Emily spoke, Hanna wasn’t sure. Time. She wasn’t sure how much time they had left. Ciara had already created so many fractures between her and Finn, and Hanna couldn’t help but wonder if they were already too deep to mend.
“Do you think we’ll be okay?” Hanna asked, looking up at Emily, her voice barely above a whisper. “Or is this the beginning of the end?”
Emily didn’t hesitate. She smiled softly, but there was a certainty in her eyes that Hanna wasn’t sure she felt in her own heart. “You’ll be okay. I know you will. You’ve been through worse. You’ll find your way back to him.”
Hanna nodded, forcing a smile that didn’t quite reach her eyes. She wanted to believe Emily, she wanted to believe that everything would work out in the end. But in the pit of her stomach, a fear lingered—one that she couldn’t shake. Would Finn come back to her? Would he ever be able to trust her the way he had before all of this started?
As the bell rang, signaling the end of lunch, Hanna stood up, her legs shaky beneath her. She knew she couldn’t keep torturing herself with “what-ifs” and “maybes.” The only thing she could do now was wait. Wait for Finn to come to her, wait for him to find his way back to her, just as she was trying to find her way back to him.
But the uncertainty was unbearable.
